Avenue A Position Summary The Cardiovascular Operating Room (CVOR) Surgical Technologist First Assist (CST/FA or CST/CFA) functions as a surgical first assistant to the surgeon during cardiac surgical procedures working under the direction and supervision of that surgeon and in accordance with hospital policy and appropriate laws and regulations. Assists the surgeon by positioning, prepping and draping the patient, retracting tissue, suturing and ligating tissue, suctioning and applying dressings. Harvests the vein to be used for coronary grafts endoscopically and/or via open incisions. The CVOR first assistant assists in non-cardiac surgical procedures when not needed for cardiac procedures. The first assist does not function as a surgical technician and surgical first assistant concurrently. On occasion the surgical first assistant may have to perform the duties of a surgical technician. Surgical procedures performed at YRMC include: General Surgery, Bariatric (Weight Loss), Dental, Eye, Heart, Orthopedic, Pediatric, Podiatry, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Plastic/Reconstructive, Thoracic, Urology, Vascular and Open Heart. YRMC's surgical facilities include ten operating suites in the main operating room, two of which are dedicated to open hearts, four operating suites in the women's section, and four operating suites in the Outpatient Surgery Department. They also include three Post Anesthesia Care Units (PACUs), often called recovery rooms, where patients are cared for immediately after surgery. Area of Interest Allied Health Start Date Immediately Work Week M-F w/ Ocassional Weekends Daily Hours 8 Bi-Weekly Hours 80 External Education Education Required: Certification as Surgical Technologist First Assist (CST/FA) or Graduate of Surgical Technology First Assist Program or five years of employment ST/FA.Training in harvesting vein, both through open leg incisions and endoscopically; BCLS Certification Education Preferred: Certification as Surgical Technologist First Assist (CST/FA) External Experience Experience Required: 2 years experience as a surgical technologist, if CST/FA or Graduate of Surgical First Assist Program and 1 year experience endoscopically harvesting vein. Computer proficiency (must be able to pass computer proficiency assessment). Experience Preferred: 3 + years' experience as a CVOR Surgical Technologist First Assist; 2+ years' experience endoscopically harvesting vein, using the Terumo system.
